The Eel and the Jellyfish

The eel and the jellyfish are an unlikely duo

The eel has teeth as I'm sure you know

And just like a shark they are incredibly sharp

To help it bite hard shelled crabs and carp

Not all jellyfish have the same features

And they tend to be isolated creatures

But now and then they get together

To gather volumes of food in inclement weather

The jellyfish stings but it also glows

As it pulses and shimmers and shifts below

The waves where its dark and nobody goes

But now there are times of worry and woe

The flow of tides where the jellyfish feeds

 And lives alongside sloppy seaweed

Is bringing disaster in all shapes and sizes

While litter spreads out as the sea rises

Along the sea surface fish are being strangled

Lost and hopeless as they are entangled

Trapped and breathless  and nowhere to go

While the loss of life is painful and slow

The eel sometimes joined others in packs

But most of the time he pursued his own track

So, when he saw the jellyfish in great distress

He did something amazing that you'd never guess

It happened one day when the jellyfish forgot

To check behind her and was caught by a knot

Of castaway rope and fish catching nets

Old lobster pots and rubber made pets

She would always take oxygen through her pale skin

But now her chance of survival was incredibly thin

The eel  was not known to rescue trapped fish

And would simply treat them like a meal on a dish

This time he wriggled with his mouth wide open

When the jellyfish was trapped in a can that was broken

So he burst and projected a sharp electric bolt

Which turned the can over and gave it a jolt

The jellyfish was out and gracefully retreated

Relieved to be free and still undefeated

By the plastic thrown out without any thought

For the danger to fish in the sea being caught

And disappearing over time and lost forever

But the eel decided to do something he never

Had ever thought of doing, not once in the past

And for once in his life and probably the last

He saved the jellyfish and in years to come

Sailors would speak of the brave eel and his plan

That saved a jellyfish from a discarded can

And pulsated away across plastic and sand

The jellyfish had lived for many long lifetimes

And would carry on glowing for many more night-times

She kept clear of debris and then, only sometimes,

She thought of the eel and longed for the old times.
